REI Return Policy

REI accepts returns for one full year on most items under its satisfaction guarantee — the gear didn't work out, bring it back. Electronics get 90 days. The guarantee does not cover ordinary wear and tear: gear that served you fine and then wore out is not "unsatisfying."

The rules the official page won't tell you

Can I return used hiking gear to REI?

Yes, within a year, if it genuinely didn't work out — that is the point of the guarantee. What gets refused is gear that simply wore out from the use you got out of it.

Do REI members need receipts?

Effectively no — co-op purchases attach to your member number and can be pulled up at the desk. Guest purchases need the receipt or the card used.

What is REI's electronics window?

Ninety days for electronics — GPS units, watches, headlamps and the like — instead of the year most gear gets.

A year to change your mind puts REI in IKEA territory — and far past every general sporting-goods competitor.

The hard part is remembering the deadline

Scan any REI receipt and PurchVault works out the return window and warranty, then reminds you before they close.
